About Platform

Platform is on a mission to build leadership capacity among young Black, Indigenous, and racialized women and gender-diverse youth to advance gender equity and justice. We envision a liberated future where Black, Indigenous, and racialized women and gender-diverse folks have autonomy over their bodies, land, and decision-making in and for their communities.

We’re a small but mighty team and take a collaborative and holistic approach to our work. Although we all bring different expertise and capacities to the table, we take on a shared responsibility for delivering our work in a timely manner and in line with Platform’s vision.

We work remotely and in-person in our office located in Tkaranto (Toronto) in the Dish with One Spoon Territory. Our work hours and program delivery times are in EST/EDT.

The position and profile

The Managing Director reports to the Board of Directors and helps develop strategies and programs to deliver on Platform’s strategic priorities. They are responsible for leading and supporting staff, overseeing Platform’s operations, and ultimately delivering on its mission to build leadership capacity among young Black, Indigenous, and racialized women and gender-diverse youth to advance gender equity and justice.

The Managing Director will work collaboratively with team members, funders, community members, and the Board to ensure overall sustainability and quality of Platform’s programming.

  • Location: Remote (Canada), EDT work hours
  • Duration: 1 year contract with possibility of extension 
  • Term: full time – 34 hours a week (4-day work week, some weekend and evening availability required) 
  • Salary: $85,000.00 CAD 
  • Start Date: January 2023
  • Reports to: Board of Directors
  • Vacation: 15 vacation days, 15 sick days, 5 personal days, paid menstrual leave, organization-wide summer and winter break (2 weeks)
  • Internet access support: $50 per month
  • Wellness support: $100 per monthly

A successful applicant will have:
  • A strong commitment to a liberated future where Black, Indigenous, and racialized women and gender-diverse folks have autonomy over their bodies, land, and decision-making in and for their communities.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in key aspects of operational management including financial, human resources, and marketing.
  • Three to five years of experience as a senior manager preferably with non-profit management experience.
  • Solid budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, and reporting.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and manage workload and time effectively, including performing tasks in accordance with deadlines and work plans.
  • Demonstrated record of meaningfully working with Black, Indigenous, and racialized women and gender-diverse folks.
  • Capacity to oversee different projects and programs and support colleagues in meeting grant deliverables and timelines.
  • Written and oral communication skills in French is an asset.
Responsibilities

1. Leadership & Management

  • Ensure ongoing core programming excellence, program evaluation, and sound finance and administration.
  • Actively engage and energize Platform’s staff, volunteers, board members, committees, partner organizations, and funders.
  • Seek and build board involvement with strategic direction, sustainability planning, and operations.
  • Develop and maintain a workplace culture aligned with Platform’s values and mission.
  • Support staff in identifying learning and development goals and providing resources for knowledge and skill building opportunities.
  • Develop and implement systems to track progress, enable collaboration, and ensure Platform’s programs align with the organization’s vision.
  • Communicate Platform’s work, vision, and impact effectively to the board, funders, and other constituents.

2. Operations

  • Implement and maintain effective internal organizational policies, systems, processes.
  • Support the Platform Board of Directors through regular meetings, providing strategic advice, and ensuring they are engaged in key organizational decisions.
  • Lead on financial management and reporting.
  • Establish human resources policies and procedures that meet legal requirements while promoting Platform’s values and mission.
  • Support staff in developing work planning processes that enable collaboration in a remote working environment.
  • Manage grant deliverables and ensure reports to funders are completed on time.

3. Strategic Planning

  • Ensure regular strategic planning processes that engage the board, staff, and community members meaningfully in priority and direction-setting.
  • Ensure strategic discussions are focused on meeting community needs, sustainability, and capacity development at Platform and beyond.
  • Consider ways to keep building accountability to community in and beyond regular strategic planning cycles.

4. Fundraising & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Develop and implement a fundraising strategy that contributes to Platform’s sustainability.
  • Build partnerships and strong relationships with stakeholders, such as community members, funders, and sector leaders.
  • Generate new fundraising opportunities for core and program needs.
  • Deepen Platform’s public engagement — from digital presence to external relations with the goal of reaching diverse audiences and building a strong brand.
