AI IRL: How You Interact with AI and How to Stay Safe

AI is everywhere in our feeds, schools, and streets. In this session, we unpack how algorithms shape visibility and safety, spot bias and surveillance, and learn practical steps to use AI tools wisely; without code, with care, and with community together.

How You Interact with AI & How to Stay Safe is a hands-on workshop led by Erin Peterson. We break down how algorithms decide what you see, where bias shows up, and how surveillance works. You’ll learn plain-language steps for safer settings, stronger passwords and MFA, thinking critically about chatbots, and dealing with shadowbanning and content takedowns. We center women, gender-diverse, Indigenous, Black, and racialized youth – no coding required.
Leave with checklists, an AI glossary, and questions to ask any AI system: Who built it? What data trained it? Who benefits, and who can be harmed?
